june 2002 . 10:32 pm PT We went to THE ROCK, yes we did. I'd never been to THE ROCK but now I have and I have some pictures to share but remember, I'm too lazy to crop and post them. Sucks for you. Saw Gillian Welch and David Rawlings fiddle on Friday at the Fillmore (brilliant BRILLIANT guitar playing. Amazing stuff. A treat, seriously.). Saw hip-hop dance troupes strut their stuff in Stern Grove today (free concerts every Sunday!). Had a party on our stoop, watching the proud celebrate their Pride. Saw Bob Dylan not look back, made a new friend (his name is DJ!) at Amoeba. Saw the aftermath in the bookstore when Heather gave a love poem she wrote to a coworker -- anonymously exposing her admiration, with no plans to admit her authorship. Glorious! I hope you are all well, and stay tuned for some kick-ass photos, and give your roommate a kiss, and read something interesting aloud to a friend. Come ON! 24

Can there ever be enough pictures of John Dawson Chabalko on this page? Hmm. Maybe. But not today, because it's his birthday! Who's your daddy! Happy happy happy.
Public service announcement: "Minority Report" has more holes in it than [fill in your own witty analogy]. "Monsoon Wedding", on the other hand, is delightful. In other not-so-important news, the Milways are in town. They're here to take me on a fun-filled family getaway ... in scenic Reno, Nevada! We'll be staying at the Golden Nugget in downtown Reno later this week. See ya there. Can't wait. 16
june 2002 . 11:52 pm PT Funny (and long-winded) story about tattoos: Earlier in the week I went to see "13 Conversations About One Thing" with my cleverly tattooed friend Mary. The film is definitely a first feature, and there is some questionable use of instrumental music throughout, but it might make you smile at strangers, or at least think about smiling at strangers. Good cast, too (Matthew McConaughey, John Turturro, Alan Arkin). The relatively unknown and striking Clea DuVall also stars. My friend Mary has a friend who once dated Clea, and the two got tattoos together. Mary's friend got a tattoo that said "I love Clea" on her leg. Clea inked "I love [Mary's friend] on her arm. When the relationship ended, Clea, an actress, could afford to cover her "I love [Mary's friend] tattoo with a decorative black box. Mary's friend, who was a low-paid punk rocker, couldn't afford such solid tattooing. So she modified her tattoo with a few letters. It now says "I love Cleaning" on her leg. Cleaning! News to me: "Fat babies" is slang for people who work in the video game industry. Fat babies? Yeah, fat babies. Fatbabies.com has the inside scoop. After my recent exposure to the folks behind Dance Dance Revolution (including a front-row view of the DDR world champions smacking the lighted dance floor), I'm ready. Ready for what? I do not know. My god: Alt-country music meets Beck in the form of Chuck Prophet. Who lives and loves in San Francisco. Who writes songs you should download here. He's doing an Amoeba in-store Monday, his new album "No Other Love" is on shelves Tuesday, and I already bought his former band's best-of record (the band is Green on Red and all you Wilco/Son Volt/Tim Easton fans will appreciate it). Missed connections: "Hip" brown sweater? I wonder who wrote this for me? Went to the fund-raiser keg party at 826 Valencia the other night. Yes, Dave Eggers was there. And his pirate supply store/drop-in writing center rocks. One of the raffle prizes included a haircut (!) by Dave (!!). The party was crowded, of course, which gave Counterirritant an excuse to bump into Mr. Staggering Genius twice. Eggers scowled in response. *sigh*

june 2002 . 10:30 pm PT For your commute home (if you missed it in March): Malcolm Gladwell's history of paper. Find out why a messy desk is a good thing! Discover why little slips of paper help planes land safely! We moved: Woo-hoo. New month, new home, new neighborhood, and cable teevee.
I haven't lived in a house with cable since '97! It's a whole new world. When's the party?, you ask. I'll have to get back to you on that. But it's coming, oh boy is it coming. 07

Also born on this day is Hazelle June, who hosted a fabulous party over the weekend. Here is a picture of her (thanks to Matt. Why not visit all of his party pictures?).
My my MY was it a party weekend. I also attended a 21st birthday celebration, complete with a greasy male stripper. My friend's father stormed into the room and pulled the stripper off his daughter spread-eagle on the floor. Now that's entertainment.
