28 may 2003 . 11:10 pm PT Now you too can listen to my spastic radio appearance.
26 may 2003 . 11:42 pm PT Clear and sunny today (god bless the troops), so we gathered our forces and had marvelous foods at Jason's Baker Beach resort (after watching most of the MTV "Punk'd" marathon). Here's Jason rocking out:
Sunday we climbed around the ruins of Sutro Baths (it was a sprawling public bathhouse -- seven thousand people turned out for the 1896 opening). The fog was rolling in, we both had cameras. It was a mess.
Blogging is all over the media these days, and now photo blogs take the top Arts & Leisure story in Sunday's New York Times. Puh-lease. (But as far as photo blogs go, don't miss Fotolog.net and Japanese Streets). A much better read is the Q&A with Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Saw the new Matrix, and it was okay. There's a preview for the next Matrix after the (ridiculously long) credits roll. The Godard film wasn't all that great. But Gillian & David at the Palace of Fine Arts was superb. That pair has talent (and a new album next week). Here's a great video of a sad slow song from their last release. Dad, you'll love this! Oh lordy, an all-jazz Beck tribute album? "The familiar refrain of 'Loser' becomes instrumental caramel," reports the Chronicle. These days I'm in love with Badly Drawn Boy, "The Hour of Bewilderbeast" and The Kills, "Keep on Your Mean Side." Memorial Day = BBQ? Anyone? Bueller?
20 may 2003 . 05:42 pm PT Last week: Walked by a guy in a bike helmet balanced on a Segway Human Transporter, corner of Noe & 14th. Seeing this thing on the street is simply mad. It's hard to believe, the way it floats upright. Did I tell you I rode one? Oh I did, right into a wall. Follow along as Slate invades Paris by Segways. Sunday: Annual Bay to Breakers madness, when tens of hundreds of thousands of people arise at 8 am to don costumes (or wear nothing at all) and run/walk/dance the seven miles between the bay and the Pacific. World's largest foot race. Huge fricking party, all across town. We watched from Christa's Fell street stoop, huge sound system to our right, people squirting hoses to our left, kegs rolling straight down the street. Grand. (And only one guy died.) Yesterday: Finished reading "The Lovely Bones." Shed many tears. Ah, life and love and death, what else is there? Family. Pain. Grief. Joy. Etc. Recommended. Tonight: "Buffy" series finale (boohooo) and Gillian Welch on stage. Tomorrow: More hot hot heat on the SF streets. This only happens for a week or two a year, my friends. Must take advantage.
13 may 2003 . 03:50 pm PT Librarians make voting fun: Connect with your elected officials (including, duh, the Pres) by email, phone numbers, voting history, and so much more. Scan current key votes then enter your zip code to find out what your representatives are up to. It's a snap! Brought to you by the American Librarian Association. Another supplier of t-shirts that will make you instantly popular: T-Shirt Hell. Available in all sizes, even if you're a little baby. KFOG Kaboom Saturday night -- the annual fireworks spectacular synced to Top-40 music -- and we were on a boat in the bay. It's all about who you know, folks. Who do you know.

may 2003 . 07:17 pm PT They did indeed let me on the plane last week, with a photocopied picture ID from the CA DMV, the words "not an official verification" stamped all over it (this is all I have to go on until the laminated and official license arrives in the mail). Guess I don't look like a terrorist. In fact, in a couple places they never asked to see my ID. People! I have scissors! And syringes! Made it to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the joyous (and hot, oh that East Coast humidity) celebration of Kristin and Todd's nuptials. We all analyzed John's new haircut while eating the Yannick's famous meatballs. And Yuengling beer, gulp sigh. There was a fiery duel between the mothers on opposing sides of the new family, but no one was hurt. At least not physically. Rumor has it that my reading brought one of the bridesmaids to tears. And -- get this -- my date gladly participated in a swing dancing lesson at the reception. Wonders will never cease. All in all, it was lovely.
Here's what else you'll find in Raleigh, North Carolina. Yes, there's a lot of wood:
And to clear up Monday night's debate: Cinco de Mayo honors the Mexican victory over the French in 1862, well after their 1810 independence from Spain. It's also Brooke's birthday and her family knows how to throw down on a Monday night! Aye yie yie!
